Recovery Is More Than Not Drinking
It’s morning coffee before a meeting.
A quiet drive home after hearing exactly what you needed to hear.
A sponsor’s number written on a folded piece of paper in your wallet.
A medallion sitting beside the sink.
A journal filled with hard truths and hopeful beginnings.
A simple reminder on a wall, desk, or dashboard that helps you stay grounded one more day.
Recovery lives in ordinary moments.
And for a long time, the things made for recovery didn’t reflect the beauty, warmth, humor, and humanity of the life we were building.
That’s where Recovery Swag began.
Our Story
In the summer of 2000, I walked into the International AA Convention in Minneapolis with five years of sobriety and one specific mission: find something cool to wear.
Something that said I’m in recovery and I’m proud of this life — without looking like it came off a church basement folding table.
What I found was a sea of Old English font shirts, generic slogans, and products that felt disconnected from the actual experience of recovery.
And I remember thinking:
Really? This is what we’ve got?
Because if you’ve spent time around the rooms, you know recovery has its own language. Its own energy. Its own quiet symbolism.
You spot a “Friend of Bill W.” sticker in a parking lot and instantly feel connected. Alcoholics Anonymous
You hear “Easy Does It” and understand there’s an entire life philosophy packed into three words.
Recovery is deeply personal, but it’s also deeply shared.
And the products available to us never seemed to honor that.
So in 2008, I started Recovery Swag.
Not to make novelty merchandise.
To create recovery lifestyle goods that actually feel like recovery.
What We Believe
We believe recovery deserves beauty.
Not perfection.
Not luxury for luxury’s sake.
Not polished influencer culture.
But thoughtful objects. Warm design. Meaningful reminders. Things that feel intentional in the spaces where people actually live their lives.
A mug that becomes part of a morning ritual.
A journal someone reaches for during Step work.
A sponsor gift that says thank you for helping save my life.
A small reminder on a difficult day that someone else understands this path too.
Recovery Swag creates gifts, apparel, journals, meeting essentials, and daily reminders for people in AA, NA, Al-Anon, OA, and the broader recovery community.
Everything is designed through the lens of lived experience — by people who understand meeting culture, sponsorship, anniversaries, hard conversations, spiritual growth, and the strange, beautiful humor that exists inside recovery spaces.
We Are Not a Glum Lot
That line from the Big Book may be our unofficial motto.
Recovery is serious work, but it isn’t meant to strip away joy, personality, creativity, or laughter.
Some of our favorite designs are inspired by the kind of conversations that happen after meetings over coffee:
- the inside jokes,
- the honest moments,
- the little sayings that somehow carry enormous truth.
Recovery culture is rich with meaning, humor, tenderness, and humanity.
We think the things surrounding recovery should reflect that too.
More Than Merchandise
Recovery Swag has been around since 2008 — through Zen Cart, Etsy, Shopify, redesigns, reinventions, and a whole lot of learning along the way.
But the mission has stayed the same:
Create things that people in recovery genuinely want in their lives.
Not clutter.
Not gimmicks.
Not loud “sober merch.”
Just meaningful, emotionally grounded pieces designed to live alongside real recovery.
This brand was built by someone who’s been in the rooms for more than twenty-five years and still understands recovery the same way most of us do:
One day at a time.
Who We’re For
- For the newcomer walking into their first meeting.
- For the sponsor answering late-night calls.
- For the person celebrating 30 days.
- For the person celebrating 30 years.
- For home groups, sober homes, coffee tables, meditation corners, and meeting bags.
- For the people learning how to build a life instead of simply escape one.
If recovery is part of your life story, you’re welcome here.
